Above is a close-up of the Spineless Cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica.) Luther Burbank experimented with many varieties of cacti over a twenty-year period. He sought to produce a spineless cactus which could provide forage for desert cattle. Importing cacti from around the world he developed many new varieties, including several with beautiful edible fruit, as shown here. In the background are the Ginkgo Biloba trees.
